Local Interest

The Kaleva region is home to many natural attractions and outdoor sports and activities. Ride your bike on scenic trails, hunt and fish for local game, or enjoy a museum tour or another of our many cultural experiences. Surrounded by an abundance of natural resources, Kaleva is a great place for a peaceful retreat.

Fishing

The Kaleva area boasts some of the best river and lake fishing of northern Michigan.  Many lakes, rivers, and streams like the Manistee and Pine bring in anglers from all over the country.  Trout and salmon along with many other species are prevalent and Lake Michigan charters are only a few miles away.
And don't forget that ice fishing is available with easy access on many nearby lakes throughout the winter and there are several tackle shops in the area. For area fishing reports, click here.

Self-Guided Quilt Trail

Community members have designed and created quilt patterns related to the history of buildings or communities in the county. They are then painted and affixed to the side of a building or other structures, with an explanation of each design.

Self-Guided

Historical Museum Tour

Manistee County is home to many historical museums, two of which are located in Kaleva, the Bottle House Museum and the Kaleva Depot.

Hunting

Superior hunting on state and national forest land makes for a fun outing for you and your crew.  Manistee National Forest and Pere Marquette State Forest both bring hunters to the area for bear, deer, and small game. Both the bow and rifle seasons are very successful in these forests. Kaleva is right in the middle of it.

Skiing

Downhill and cross country skiing is available at local ski resorts, Crystal Mountain and Caberfae Peaks, as well as the Big M Trailhead. You can snowshoe, hike, and bike major trails all within 15 minutes of the Kaleva.

Snowmobiling

The Manistee trail system runs right through the middle of Kaleva, where you can grab breakfast or lunch at the local restaurants as you head out for a day of beautiful winter scenes on freshly groomed trails.  Soft morning lake effect snows make our trails some of the best in Michigan.

Kaleva Roadside Park and Healy Lake Campground are beautiful, especially in the fall during the color change. There are several country roads to explore which makes the experience fun for the entire family.
