KND Service Learning Class Update

If people are wondering what the Service Learning students are doing this semester:
  1. Landscaping along Walta St. where the old railroad grade will be a groomed walkway eventually connecting with the village park. The students have planted many bushes, periennial flowers and trees along the path and the entranceway is marked by original mileage pillars donated by Somsel Lumber Co. Thanks to David Somsel and Bill Weaver for help in setting these last month. There will also be wood and metal sculptures along the walkway. One has been placed and others are being constructed by students working with Howard Shedd and Andy Priest.

  2. Repainting the welcome signs north and west of the village. Students assisted by Larry Cowger have been brightening up the faded colors and will apply a sealer which will help the finish last longer.

  3. Roofing the Log Cabin Outdoor Theater with hand cut cedar shingles. Doyle Eckhardt is tapering the shakes which students chopped out of logs donated by Edwin Nelson, Jr. last winter. They are also recycling wood floor boards which will be used in the cabin. Performances are being scheduled for the Four Fridays in August 2000.
Other news:
Kaleva Historical Society Centennial Planning committee continues to meet the fourth Tuesday of the month, however, no meeting in December. All are welcome to submit ideas for making the celebration a huge event. Steve Harold of the Manistee County Historical Society is advising the group.

The Historical Society is holding a Christmas Open House on December 5 from 4:00 to 6:00. Members will be there to host the event which will feature home baked Finnish as well as other ethnic breads and goodies. Plan to attend and see the "Finnish Heaven" which will be a focal point of the decorations again this year. The Kaleva Art Gallery will hold an Open House the same day from 12:00 to 6:00. Come and do your shopping/buying from over thirty local artists' works for sale.

The third annual Winter Solstice, lighting of the Kaleva cemetery will be held on Wednesday, December 22. Needed are used or new candles four to six inches long. There will be a display of luminaries at the North Country Bank which is also the drop off point for candles. A group will be making and setting out the luminaries at Sulo and Hazel Hulkonen's garage across from the cemetery starting at 4:00. The goal is to have 250-300 lighted bags set out by dark. Come and join the fun there or your family may choose to set out your own.

Keittokirja (kay-to-ker-i-a) video and cookbook are for sale at the Kaleva Art Gallery. The video has fifteen to twenty minute segments of the first twelve bakers' recipes in the cookbook. These are great for holiday giving and all proceeds support the student projects in Kaleva.
